Culture

Bradford, West Yorkshire is a city in North central England. Bradford was a huge industrial city in Bronte Country. It grew in importance as a major producer of textiles during the industrial revolution. This made Bradford the "woollen center of the world."

Culture:
Bradford is one of the north's most culturally and ethnically diverse cities. Since it is the former textile capital of the world, Bradford has a long history of immigration. The first immigration was that of Germans, Italians, and Eastern Europeans (including Poles, Ukrainians, and Latvians). The second major immigration was from India. This was mostly from Pakistan. After the demise of the textiles, due to competition with India, South East Asia, and the far East, there was a thriving Asian business community. Bradford is a base to Asian culture and art organizations.
We saw Pakistan in the Movie THE ARBOR. Andrea Dunbar was with a Pakistani. We saw the racial issues that were portrayed during this time.

Religion:
Britain is a multi-faith society in which everyone has the right to religious freedom. The official religion of England is Christianity, as practiced by the Church of England. There are also Roman Catholics and Methodists. As it is so diverse, Britain also includes people of the Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh religions. People are usually even nice to those who do not practice any religion or do not believe.

UK population by religion, April 2001.

Food:

While researching foods of the UK, in general, everything said diversity. With the ethnic diversity, there will of course be diversity in food. Some food legends are as follows:

Of course, fish and chips is a popular meal of England.

Farmers markets include freshly grown vegetables, lovingly reared organic meat and poultry, cakes and pies, home baked bread, and tastes of the East and Africa.

Local Pubs and cafes are very popular to eat at in Bradford. There seems to be pride in local foods in Bradford.

Music:

The UK sponsors all types of music. There are tons of orchestras and theaters in West Yorkshire. The performing arts are very popular there as well. There is music from Rap and RnB to pianists and classical music. There is also a lot of influence from other cultures as well. American music is a part of England entertainment.

Values:

High value is placed on family support. Many children base their lives around that of their parents. Children follow family values in most situations. They learn how to act by following the parents' footsteps. Education is very important as well. Even in families that the parents were not educated, the parents place high value on the children's education. There are differences from family to family though. Many values stem from religious beliefs and values.
We saw this struggle in the movie. Andrea had three children by three different fathers. Her first child was with a man of another ethnicity. Her children were born out of wedlock. Andrea's oldest daughter followed in her footsteps. Lorraine had children with different fathers as well. Throughout the movie we saw the harsh realities of the Dunbar family''s life.

  1. This may be a small touch, but I like how you added information about the food. Throughout this course, we have been exploring numerous cultures, and it's nice to get an even closer look at one of them...even if it is the food (which I personally don't mind). :) I also like how you divided each part of culture up instead of mashing them all together, i.e. you had a separate section for music, one for food, etc. It was also a nice added touch to be able to look at the pictures while reading through the information. It almost seemed to me like I was reading through a brochure of Britain instead of a course presentation, which made reading your blog a lot more interesting and entertaining. There is one thing I want to recommend to you: a works cited area at the bottom. Your project is excellent, so I don't want you to get in trouble for plagiarism or anything like that!

    1. Oh, thank you so much. I am glad you were entertained by it. I do have all my websites in which this information came. I just did not post it. I may do that in a comment. Thanks for the tip!

  2. I agree heavily with what beyondbeliefdocumentary said. This project is excellent. Great use of visual aids and links. This was well thought out and planned. And maybe instead of adding a work cited, just add links within or right after each paragraph to show where you got the information from.I like how you separated each category of their culture and the use of statistics.Great job. Maybe you could have added a link or a video that showed their culture. Here is a link to the trailer that shows a part of their culture and the things they have to deal with. http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/video/2010/sep/28/the-arbor-trailer-andrea-dunbar

  3. I like the color and pictures you choose, makes the page seem more inviting then others. Good Touch! i enjoyed reading it and the pictures made it even easier to understand and grab a grasp on what you were saying. I tried finding pictures or videos to add for the culture and religion to make it more specific. I couldnt find anything realy geared towards that topic but i found a site that has some videos. You can look at them for your self and see if they fit in with what your trying to say. Just a thought. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1623008/videogallery

  6. I also thought this page was very well done! You have a lot of interesting information about this culture. I also like how you added the food to the culture page. Food really is a big aspect of culture! Those different foods were very interesting ha ha. I have never heard of any of them! I also like your usage of pictures, it is a very nice touch. :)

  7. This comment is from Katlynn Stoll, I think that your use of visual aids and pictures was really helpful to understand the culture aspect of the Arbor. Culture clash was a large problem in this film, so getting more information about the background of the culture during the time was really good to know. I found this film to be very interesting and your information made it more understandable and relatable in a way I guess. Knowing details such as the music that was popular makes me better able to picture this film in real life even though it was of another time in another place.

  8. I really like how you shared the details about this culture, everything from the food to the values. Very thorough and very well done. I also liked how you related Britain's culture to bits of other cultures as well, such as when you said how American music is part of the culture. This helped me to get a big picture as well as a glimpse into the culture of Britain. What beyondbeliefdocumentary said sums it up perfectly: "It almost seemed to me like I was reading through a brochure of Britain instead of a course presentation, which made reading your blog a lot more interesting and entertaining." Great job!

  11. The part about immigration that you talked and Pakistanis coming to that area really helped me understand why people treated Andrea the way they did for having a child with a Paki and why she wished she didn’t have Lorraine because her father was a Paki. The racial issues that were happening during this time make everything so much more clear. I really liked the pictures you added to this page they really gave me a sense of the culture that u were referring too.

  12. I thought it was great how you explained the immigration and helped me to understand a little bit more. I would have liked to learn more about the families, and the differences between the Pakistani families, I think that would have been really interesting to see as well.

  13. There's some great info here! I loved the bit about the food and it was good to get some background on the area in which this film takes place. The pictures and as well as the chart of religions were very helpful. All in all this section of the blog was very interesting and easy to read. Thanks a lot for the insight.

  14. Rachel Keim: I never knew Bradford was the "woolen center of the world." From what I saw in the movie and where the film was taking place, I'm not sure I would have been able to gather that the town was known for such huge industrialization. I felt it kind of put a new context on the setting of the movie and Andrea Dunbar's life.

  15. I am glad everyone enjoyed this page! I never really knew about all the background about Bradford either. It was interesting to see all these details. In the movie, we never saw anything about the city itself too much. The movie was more about the struggles Andrea and her family went through. Glad some of you learned new things, as I did too.

  17. I really liked the variety of information you included on your page. For example, religion, food, values, and music were all touched on. It's funny, you wouldn't think that the UK's culture is much different than ours, but you can definitely see some differences. Thanks for sharing!

  18. I agree this was a very well put together blog. The division in topics and fluidity of the pictures relating to the topics really helped. I liked the examples of the music, food, religion and ethnic background. The statistics is also a great add and one I should have added. I think that this allowed me to not only learn more then I would normally but also add to the context of the movie.

    1. I am hoping this page allowed people to understand a little more about the movie. There are some things we miss as viewers since it is not our culture.
