Technical

The film The Arbor is a strange, unique, and ultimately fascinating film. The Arbor film details a story about Andrea Dunbar's troubled growing up and the neighborhood where she lived and where most of her work took place. The film was shot using unconventional techniques. The director Clio Barnard chose a more cinematic approach for to detail the dramatics involved with Andrea Dunbar and her dysfunctional movie. The dialogue amongst the characters in the movie is lip-synced where each character represents a different person in her family but isn't really that character. This technique is easy the spot as first and even becomes odd, and unusual. But, once the film gets going into the thick of the stories, the viewer gains a more appreciation for the unusual cinematography techniques.

In addition to the unusual portrayal of actors voices off-screen the film The cinematography used for the movie is used more at home in a type of narrative form rather then a documentary. Nonetheless, the film is gripping and is sure to grab an audience's attention for all 94 minutes. The film unusual techniques of having certain character play key roles of Dunbar's family, makes the movie very interesting at times, and causes the viewer to play strict attention to the entire film. After watching the film it also makes the viewer have a different type of feeling for parents. It even causes the viewer to question whether Andrea's mother was a good parent.

The director's vision for the film even goes beyond his unusual techniques of having his cast members lip-synch for the members of the family. There are even scenes in the movie where the director uses the neighbors as sit in audience members. This unusual technique really seems to fit perfect with the first person direct camera content seen in the movie. It also is a great way to show Andrea's day-to-day experiences and reactions.

In conclusion, this movie not only is a chance of pace for moviegoers, but also breaks any normality of the typical movie being seen in theaters today. This movie gives the audience a chance to really feel as if their experiencing issues first hand.

  1. Although your information was great, it would've been nice to have a few photos to accompany it. The YouTube video was a nice touch, but I was a bit disappointed to see that it was your only visual. While talking about the lip-syncing of actors, you could add this link to give a closer look at this cinematic device: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2010/oct/25/clio-barnard-the-arbor-dunbar .

  2. Great information but you are lacking with visual aids. I was greatly informed and your hard work shows, but visual aids could help the information be received. Great touch with the video. Here is a link to some pictures you man want to use. Here is a link of a picture used by Los Angeles Times: http://articles.latimes.com/2011/may/08/entertainment/la-ca-indie-focus-20110508

  3. Your information was good and all but the page itself was sorta boring. You need to add some color and pictures to the text to make the reading more enjoyable and interesting. Pictures can help readers get a better grasp of what your saying. The video was a good touch though i think. Overall though good job.

  5. I also agree with everyone in the fact that there should have been more visual aids used, but the information about the technical aspects of the film is spot on. I learned a lot from this page. I was very intrigued when watching the movie in knowing that the actors where lip syncing to the real people's voices. That was really neat!

  7. This comment is from Katlynn Stoll, I think the information you presented was really good and the movie was informative. Maybe a bit more pictures or maybe another video would have been useful. Overall great work though. I too am doing the technical part of my blog, so seeing yours was helpful.

  8. I agree with everyone else in saying that you gave a lot of great information. I can understand how difficult it is to incorporate visuals into your blog as I had Technical as well. You did a very good job!

  9. The lip-syncing was honestly amazing to me I really had no idea that’s what they did until I read the director portion of the page. I agree that the way this movie is told is really unconventional and hard to follow but yet by the end you feel that you were there with the people and you know them. I like how Mark Kermode said in the video that “This movie shows that everyone has a different version of a story.” We really see that in this movie, especially with Lorraine and her younger siblings who view their mother, Andrea, completely differently. Great job on this page!

  10. I had read something during my research that explained that the actors were lip-syncing. I thought this was so interesting. The movie has a very earry feeling to it. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Most of the time this was because I did not know what was going on. I was confused. It was really interesting to see the way the movie was filmed. It changes around and keeps the viewer interested. Like Nikki says about Mark Kermode's comment, we see that they did have a different story. This is reality. Every day people view things in a different way. There was interesting points throughout your play. Visual aids would have spiced it up, but I think overall it was good. It was an easy read.

  12. The cinematic elements of this movie are really intriguing and I think you did a great job of describing them. Lip-syncing as an actual technique was completely foreign to me, so it was definitely interesting to see. The writing was great, one or more visual aids would have been nice, but overall good job.

  13. I thought that the family members being played by other people, along with the lip syncing was one hand interesting, yet on the other hand confusing. It seemed like so much was going on, but I also felt like that it was appropriate for the film.

  14. Rachel Keim: Again, I found all of the information on the lip syncing technique to be very interesting. I just can't quite wrap my head around that! It seems like it would be unnatural and obvious in the movie, but I really don't think I noticed any huge awkward, unnatural moments with it. Did any of your research happen to tell how much time and effort had to go into that technique? Was it pretty simple or was it complex and took a lot of work?
